As if ghosts, suicides, and serial killers weren’t enough, these days, tenants of the infamous Cecil Hotel are adding a new chapter of horror to the building’s grim history: deplorable living conditions.
Residents, haunted by a different kind of terror, marched to City Hall Tuesday to demand improvements. Mold, unresolved maintenance issues, and broken elevators are just a few of the issues that tenants claim are plaguing them as much as the building’s alleged, severe roach investigation.
What may look abandoned on the outside, with the exception of its daily collage of tourists, the Historic Cecil Hotel still boast the grandeur kin to many of downtown’s great monuments in time. Built in 1912, the hotel’s attributes include a grand marble lobby, mezzanine, staircase with some of the most breathtaking rooftop views of downtown.
Located in traditional Skid Row, on the corner of 7th and Main, the 600-unit megalith has been up for sale since March of 2024 and has served as an affordable housing complex for the homeless since late 2021.
Now 100 years old, has become a far cry from its glamorous past. As the building goes up for sale, tenants are pleading for a buyer who will prioritize the well-being of its residents like no other.
Surrounded by the blood of jumpers and plagued by mysterious deaths, these new tales of mayhem and woe seem to indicate the Cecil Hotel’s dark legacy is far from over.
