Before the first note is played, the inaugural Los Angeles Jazz Festival is already making a bold statement. Conceived as a citywide celebration of music, culture, and community, the festival aims to position Los Angeles as one of the world’s premier jazz destinations while showcasing the remarkable diversity that has shaped the genre for generations. Founded by Martin Ludlow, the ambitious event is designed not only to celebrate jazz but also to generate regional tourism, support minority- and women-owned businesses, provide educational opportunities for young musicians, and promote social justice and environmental responsibility.
Following an updated schedule announcement, organizers have streamlined several festival activities to build momentum toward the signature Jazz on the Beach concert weekend. “The energy and anticipation that has been building for this inaugural LA Jazz Festival has been beyond exciting,” said LA Jazz Festival Founder and CEO Martin Ludlow. “With the goal of making every facet of the festival the ultimate fan experience, we are consolidating several of our activities leading up to our crown jewel event, the Jazz on the Beach concert weekend.”
The celebration begins with Opening Day, a free ticketed event launching Jazz in the Park with an afternoon of live music at Edward Vincent Jr. Park in Inglewood. A second free Jazz in the Park concert continues the festivities at Magic Johnson Park, expanding the festival’s mission of making world-class jazz accessible throughout Los Angeles County.
As the festival progresses, Jazz After Dark brings the music indoors with a free evening performance at Harold & Belle’s, the legendary New Orleans-style restaurant that has served as one of Los Angeles’ most cherished cultural institutions for decades.
The festival reaches its grand finale with Jazz on the Beach at Dockweiler Beach, transforming the Pacific coastline into an open-air concert venue featuring an extraordinary lineup of internationally acclaimed performers. Artists scheduled to appear include John Legend, Janelle Monáe, Charlie Wilson, Raphael Saadiq, Parliament Funkadelic featuring George Clinton, Original Koffee, Joey Alexander, Big Freedia, Ezra Collective, Free Nationals & Friends, Nubya Garcia, Terrace Martin, Pedrito Martínez, Alfredo Rodríguez, Poncho Sanchez, Justin Lee Schultz, and the LA Jazz Festival All-Star Band.
Beyond the headline performances, the weekend will feature exclusive collaborations and special presentations, including “Michelle Coltrane Celebrates the Coltrane Centennial,” honoring the enduring legacy of jazz icon John Coltrane. The LA Jazz Festival Foundation Youth All Stars will also perform, highlighting the next generation of musicians emerging from Southern California.
Education remains a central pillar of the festival through the LA Jazz Festival Youth Camp, where students from across Los Angeles County will participate in workshops and masterclasses with accomplished musicians, creating opportunities for young performers to learn directly from some of the industry’s finest artists.
By combining free neighborhood concerts, educational programming, community partnerships, legendary restaurants, and a star-studded beachfront finale, the inaugural LA Jazz Festival seeks to establish a new annual tradition that celebrates not only jazz music but also the rich cultural tapestry of Los Angeles. Organizers envision the festival growing into the third-largest international jazz festival in the world while generating significant economic activity throughout the region.
