Los Angeles State Historic Park offers a truly iconic view with the majestic DTLA skyline serving as its stunning backdrop. On Saturday, May 17th, rising behind open green spaces will be hundreds of colorful kites, promising a sky full of aerial artistry provided by the park’s visitors. This spectacular sight marks the 5th Annual Clockshop’s Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival, a family-friendly cultural event taking place from 2 PM to 6 PM.
This free and open-to-the-public celebration is for all ages, offering an array of exciting activities, including kite flying, art-making workshops, live music, and food vendors. The festival is a heartfelt tribute to the resilience, cultural histories, and aspirations of the communities surrounding Los Angeles State Historic Park, who tirelessly fought for and continue to steward this invaluable public land.
Unique kite designs by this year’s commissioned artist, Maria Maea, feature two extraordinary handcrafted kites that weave together Mexican and Samoan cultural traditions, adapting the emblem of the Lau Lupe bird into a stunning woven sculptural form.
New this year, artist Sterling Wells will be painting the kite festival live as it unfolds, capturing the magic of the event in real-time.
For the second year in a row, a kite competition will invite attendees to showcase their creativity and compete for the best handmade kite, judged by expert kite masters.
Clockshop will also host a Kite-Making Station where a limited number of donation-based kites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for attendees to assemble, decorate, and fly. Join us at Los Angeles State Historic Park, located at 1245 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012. www.clockshop.org/
